RITCHOT, Man. - A 58-year-old man was in critical condition at a Winnipeg hospital Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound just south of the city near La Barriere Park.
RCMP were called and arrived at the scene, centering around a home on Waverley Road in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot, Man., shortly after the shooting, which RCMP Sgt. Line Karpish said occurred about 3:15 p.m.
However, Karpish said she could provide very little immediate information, including whether the victim was suspected to have been shot purposely or by accident.
She confirmed little other than that officers from a detachment in St. Pierre-Jolys were at the scene, several kilometres south of the Perimeter Highway.
"They're investigating an incident involving a firearm," Karpish said.
Though early information from the scene suggested the incident was likely a hunting accident in which the man was shot in the back, Karpish dismissed that as unfounded speculation.
"I don't know where you or anyone else got that from," she said, adding such a theory is "probably going to be wrong."
Karpish refused to speculate further on the police probe, or whether it would lead to charges.
"We are not even near that point. We have statements to take," she said of investigating officers early Saturday evening. "They're on the scene doing a whole bunch of different things."
