London doc ordered to face hearing

Already facing criminal charges, a London-area family doctor has been ordered to appear before the College of Physicians and Surgeons to answer allegations of professional misconduct.

A hearing by the college for Dr. Gerard MacNeil is scheduled for Dec. 15.

Complaints on prescribing practices and record-keeping, allege MacNeil to have been incompetent in his care and treatment of 26 patients.

It is also alleged MacNeil communicated inappropriately with patients, improperly scheduled and managed patient appointments, failed to complete forms in a timely manner and discontinued professional services in a disgraceful and unprofessional manner.

Last March, MacNeil was charged by the Ontario Provincial Police health fraud investigation unit with fraud over $5,000.

MacNeil is accused of submitting billings to OHIP between 2007 and 2008 for medical services that were not provided.
