Stephen Harper rocks the House

OTTAWA - After a day fending off opposition barbs in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Stephen Harper ditched his tie and played a little rock 'n' roll in front of cheering MPs and political staff at the Conservative party's annual Christmas party.

Harper led a four-piece band called Herringbone to sing and play five songs.

With Harper at an electric piano, the band led off with a cover of Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" and then followed that up with a cover of Scottish band The Proclaimers' "I'm On My Way."

Harper dedicated that one to Scotsman and senator, Doug Finley, the mastermind of Harper's winning election campaigns who is recovering from surgery.

Harper then did an old Who song, "The Seeker" before finishing up with The Guess Who's "Share the Land".

The band came back for an encore to do a cover of the Rolling Stone's classic "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

The 30-minute concert was a surprise event and follows up on Harper's performance last year at the National Arts Centre when he took the stage to perform a version of the Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends."

On stage Wednesday, Harper noted that it was the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death and played a few chords from Lennon's "Imagine," though he did not sing the song.

Harper has said that Lennon was his favourite Beatle and, on stage Wednesday, he called Lennon "the most important person in rock."
