SARNIA — For some, $105,000 is a lot of money.
For Bluewater Health, it’s less than a day’s work.
Chief financial officer Steve Anema announced at a board of director’s meeting on Wednesday that Bluewater Health is projecting a $105,000 surplus for the end of the fiscal year.
But even six figures isn’t a lot of cash when held up against daily expenses, he said.
“If you take the total cost of the hospital and divide by 365 days, it costs us between $425,000 and $440,000 a day to operate the hospital,” he said.
“If you look at $105,000 . . . that’s about coffee time.”
The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care announced in October it would provide $8.6?million to erase costs incurred moving to the new Norman St. site and to improve key services at the hospital.
Current numbers show Bluewater Health sitting on an extra $20,000.
The projected year-end surplus shows the board has been spending correctly, said treasurer Stephane Thiffeault.
“It’s not significantly under budget and it’s not significantly over budget.”
It’s also comparable to last year’s $310,000 surplus.
The board is hopeful the ministry will increase a graduated $1.6?million payment to the full amount this year, Anema said, to pay for training costs associated with the move in July.
“We will get it eventually but we need it now instead of waiting two years,” he said.
