Police are warning area residents to be aware of various scams, including a new one sent to the Western Region OPP’s community policing e-mail.
In a second scam, Lambton OPP are warning business operators about a suspect claiming to own a coffee shop and wanting to buy gift cards for employees.
Western Region OPP Sgt. Dave Rektor said the community policing unit received an e-mail declaring the recipient a winner of a British lottery worth 2.4 million pounds, provided the “winner” supplies personal information including a passport number.
“Police want to make it very clear that nobody should ever reveal their personal information to anyone under these circumstances,” Rektor said.
“Terrorists and other organized crime groups would just love to get their hands on someone’s passport information. Once they have it, they can create false identities, purchase land and homes or make other expensive purchases just for starters.”
Rektor urged anyone who believes they are being scammed to contact a local police service, including the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
